Sinner with historic first Slam title after phenomenal turnaround in Melbourne

Yannick Siner won a historic first Grand Slam trophy after a phenomenal comeback against Daniil Medvedev. The Italian triumphed 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Australian Open.

The match started much better for Medvedev, who easily won the first two legs and looked very close to a first title in Melbourne. Instead, however, for the second time, the Russian allowed himself to lose the final at the Rod Laver Arena, leading 2-0 in the sets, after the same thing happened two years ago against Rafael Nadal. Towards the end of the second set, Syner began to find his game, as evidenced by the return of the one break at 1-5.

From there, physical fatigue certainly affected Medvedev, who became the tennis player with the most playing time within a Grand Slam tournament in the entire Open era. In the third and fourth sets, Siner prevailed with breaks in the tenth game at 5-4.

Thus, the final became the fourth five-set match for his opponent during the course of the tournament. In the deciding part, Siner was perfect on serve, and the decisive break came earlier – in the sixth game for 4-2 and to close the match 6-3.

Prior to the match, Syner had only lost one set in the tournament. He is the third Italian in history with a Grand Slam title, and in fact the first in a long time, as the previous two were Niccolò Piatrangeli (1959 and 1960 at Roland Garros) and Adriano Panatta (1976 again at Roland Garros). /BGNES
