Sinner wins the Davis Cup for Italy to end outstanding season

Italy won the Davis Cup for the second year in a row and the third time in its history after defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the final in Malaga, Spain.

World No. 1 Yannick Sinner brought his team the trophy with a 7-6(2), 6-0 victory over Talon Griekspoor, after Matteo Berrettini had earlier defeated Botik van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2. Sinner thus concluded his exceptional season in which he climbed to the top of the world rankings for the first time, won two Grand Slam titles, three Masters tournaments and the ATP Finals, starting with 73 wins and only 6 losses. The Italian became only the third tennis player in history to not record a clean sheet loss throughout the year, after Roger Federer (2005) and Serena Williams (2013).

"An incredible year, I'm proud of the whole team. There's a lot of work behind this and I'm happy to hold this trophy again. Today was a difficult day because anything can happen," said Sinner after the victory. He has won his last 14 matches of the season, losing only one set. | BGNES
