Jannik Sinner has reached the round of 16 of the Australian Open. Last year's champion and world number one defeated American Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in about two hours of play.
Sinner broke once in each of the first two sets before his opponent showed some resistance, recovering from an early break in the third, but that was all he could do. The first seed won 82% of his first serve points and saved six of Giron's seven break points. The Italian's game was not entirely free of errors - 37 unforced errors in his statistics, but this did not prove fatal to the final outcome.
Sinner is back in the second week in Melbourne and continues to defend his title with only one set lost so far - against the home team's representative Tristan Schoolkate in the second round.
In a dispute for a place in the 1/4 finals, the current holder of the trophy will face Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia or 13th seed Holger Rune. | BGNES
