US Senator Robert Menendez was found guilty on all 16 charges in the federal corruption trial by a 12-member jury in New York, CNN reported.
Menendez has engaged in bribery, extortion, fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent. Menendez faces up to 222 years in prison on the 16 charges.
The senator was part of a massive criminal scheme serving foreign powers and rogue businessmen in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, a luxury Mercedes car and pure gold bars. His wife Nadine is also involved in the scheme.
Menendez, a Democrat, is only the seventh sitting U.S. senator to be convicted of a federal crime. The verdict will put intense pressure on him to resign before his term expires at the end of the year.
As the jury read the verdict, Menendez leaned his elbows on the defense table, his hands clasped in front of his face.
Prosecutors successfully argued that the senator tried to use his power to advance Egyptian interests, interfere in criminal prosecutions and secure investments from Qatari officials, among other crimes.
Menendez's co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Wael Hanna and Fred Dybes, were also found guilty of all charges for their involvement in the scheme. | BGNES
