Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has endorsed Donald Trump's bid for the White House after the former president's dominant performance on "Super Tuesday," the BBC reports.
"It's abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the necessary trust of Republican voters to be our nominee for president. It should come as no surprise that as the nominee, he will have my support," McConnell said from Kentucky.
He was the highest-ranking Republican who has yet to endorse Trump. When McConnell was asked repeatedly in recent months whether he would back the former president, he gave no specific answers, telling reporters he would support "the eventual nominee of the party."
McConnell announced his position shortly after former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley ended her campaign for the presidency.
In his statement today, McConnell highlighted the "great things" he and Trump have accomplished during his presidency, including the overhaul of the federal judiciary and the appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court.
"I look forward to the opportunity to move from playing defense against the terrible policies that the Biden administration pursued to a sustained offensive aimed at bringing about real change and improving the lives of the American people," he stressed. /BGNES
