Scottie Scheffler produced an incredible comeback on the final day and successfully defended his title on a historic Sunday at The Players Championship. Scheffler, who was suffering from neck pain, overcame a five-shot deficit during a memorable final day at TPC Sawgrass, making an eagle and six birdies in an outstanding final day of 64 shots with no bogeys for -20 for the tournament.
The world No 1 had to wait to celebrate his big win as his Ryder Cup team-mates Brian Harman, Wyndham Clarke and Xander Schauffele had the chance to catch up, with Scheffler's victory confirmed when none of the three was able to birdie the final 19th hole to extend the battle.
Harman shot a final round of 68 to share second place in the final standings with Schauffele and Clark, while Matt Fitzpatrick birdied each of the final four holes to remain tied for fifth at -16.
Scheffler became the first golfer to defend his title at The Players Championship, the feat coming after a dominant showing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. For the American, it was the eighth PGA Tour trophy in the last 25 months.
“It's really, really special – it's not something you do often. It's hard enough to win the tournament once, so my two wins in a row here are really special. I am very grateful. I was hoping to be in this position. I fought all four days. Today I started slowly, but then I raised my level and I'm happy with the win", were the words of the already two-time champion. /BGNES
