German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition suffered a crushing defeat in the European Parliament elections. All three parties in his government fell behind the conservatives and the far right, exit polls show.
Scholz's Social Democrats scored their worst ever result of 14%, trailing the second strongest far-right party, Alternative for Germany (Alternative für Deutschland - Alternative for Germany), by between 16 and 16.5%, and well behind the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) bloc with 29.5%, according to exit polls published by national television stations ARD and ZDF.
Scholz's coalition partners the Greens remain with just 12-12.5 percent support, while the liberal Free Democratic Party won 5 percent of the vote. | BGNES
