Schengen membership for Bulgaria and Romania will not be voted on by the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council in December

The Council of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) will not deliberate on Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen membership on December 4-5, according to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke with HotNews.ro.

The JHA Council is scheduled to discuss the accession of the two countries to the Schengen area on December 4-5.

Nevertheless, a referendum is not imminent due to the fact that the Netherlands, where elections have recently taken place, has not sanctioned Bulgaria's accession, which is being consolidated with Romania.

As per the aforementioned sources, the Bucharest authorities will endeavor to arrange an extraordinary Council of the JHA subsequent to mid-December. At this council, the subject of a two-step accession, commencing with the entrance of air borders in March 2024, will be deliberated. /BGNES
