Jose Mourinho has been sacked as head coach at Serie A team Roma, the club announced. The reason for his departure are the poor results of the team since the beginning of the season.
The Portuguese specialist, who took over in May 2021, led the Italian side to triumph in the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League in 2022 and in the following campaign reached the final of the Europa League, where Roma lost to Sevilla on penalties. However, they are now ninth in the Serie A standings and are five points from the Champions League zone, which forced the club's management to resort to a coaching change.
"We want to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at Roma for his passion and efforts since arriving at the club. We will always have great memories of his time at Roma, but we feel that an immediate change is in the best interest of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants the best in their future endeavours," stated Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.
According to Sportitalia, former captain Daniele De Rossi, who was recently in charge of SPAL, is the favorite to replace Mourinho at "Olimpico" - he is expected to hold talks with the club's management today, and if all goes to plan, De Rossi will make his debut in four days at home to Verona. /BGNES
