British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a former banker, paid more than $630,000 in taxes in 2023, his office has revealed.
According to documents released by Downing Street, Susak, 43, who has been prime minister since October 2022, had earnings of £2.2m in the 2022-23 tax year, a 13% increase on the previous year.
Around £140,000 was earned as Prime Minister and Member of Parliament. Another £2.1m was from capital gains, share dividends and interest.
The figures show Sunak paid tax at a flat rate of 23%, with capital gains taxed at a lower rate than employment income.
Capital gains come primarily from a US-based investment fund.
Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of N.R. Narayana Murthy, founder of Indian technology giant Infosys.
The couple's personal wealth has put her in a controversial position and has been used by her opponents to criticize the Prime Minister for being out of touch with the problems of ordinary Britons.
After the media revealed that Murthy had used non-resident status to pay less tax on money earned outside the UK, Murthy said he would declare all income earned worldwide.
The parliamentary inquiry highlighted Sunak's failure to disclose his wife's interests in a childcare company, but did not impose sanctions. /BGNES
