Rishi Sunak on visit to Kyiv

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak traveled to Kiev to announce fresh support for Ukraine, pledging £2.5bn (€2.9bn) in military aid for 2024/2025, Downing Street said in a statement. AFP.

"The amount is £200 million more than the last two years," the statement said, adding that he would also sign a "historic" security cooperation agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"The totem agreement should be the first step towards an unwavering centenary partnership between the two countries," Sunak's Downing Street office said in a press release.

It added that the additional funding would target areas including long-range missiles, air defense, artillery munitions and maritime security.

At least £200m of this will be spent on a major push to rapidly buy and produce thousands of military drones for Ukraine, including surveillance, long-range strike and maritime drones.

Sunak will also meet emergency workers who are dealing with the aftermath of the Russian airstrikes.

"For two years, Ukraine has fought with great courage to repel the brutal Russian invasion," Sunak said before the visit.

"They are still fighting, unwavering in their determination to defend their country and uphold the principles of freedom and democracy. I am here today with one message: the UK will not waver either. We will support Ukraine in its darkest hours and in better times ahead," he added. /BGNES
