US President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing former intelligence director Richard Grenell as a special envoy for peace in Ukraine to lead talks to end the war with Russia.
Earlier, on November 13, Fox News reported that Trump planned to announce a special envoy to take the lead in peace talks between Moscow and Kiev. During his campaign, Trump insisted that if re-elected, he would negotiate a quick end to the war.
Grenell is a contender for the new position, four sources close to Trump's plans for the new administration told Reuters.
Grenell was the US ambassador to Germany during Trump's first term as president and served as acting director of national intelligence for a period in 2020. He was also appointed as the special presidential envoy for the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo in the period 2019-2021.
In July, Grenell told Bloomberg that the path to peace in Ukraine could include the creation of “autonomous zones,” although he did not give many details.
“Autonomous zones can mean many things to many people, but these details need to be worked out,” he said.
Grenell does not believe that Ukraine should become a member of NATO in the near future. | BGNES
