Qinwen Zheng stops world number 1 Swiatek to secure a place in Olympics final

China's Qinwen Zheng is through to the final of the Olympic tennis tournament in Paris after surprising world No. 1 Iga Swiatek with a 6-2, 7-5 win in just over an hour and 50 minutes.

The sixth-ranked Asian struck first in the opening set, breaking in the third game. Swiatek broke back, but from there Zheng went on a great run of four straight games to take the lead. However, the second set started strongly for the Pole, who pulled ahead with 4-0 and two breaks. Everything seemed to be heading for a third set, but Zheng produced a phenomenal turnaround and took seven of the next eight games to book a place in the final.

The Chinese made twice as many breaks in the match, and unforced errors proved to be the key - as many as 36 on Swiatek's account. Zheng made just 13 over the course of two sets.

In contention for the title, the world number seven will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia or Wimbledon semi-finalist Donna Vekic. | BGNES
