Vladimir Putin has said that Russia should start producing banned medium-range missiles, AFP reported.
Putin's call came days after Moscow blamed the US for the Ukrainian strike on Crimea, which used US-supplied ATACMS missiles equipped with cluster munitions. The Kremlin claims that four people were killed in the attack.
Russia has vowed a tough response to what it calls increased US involvement in the conflict.
Putin said Russia should begin producing missiles previously banned under a now-defunct Cold War treaty.
The Russian president added that the US had recently sent medium-range missiles - capable of hitting targets at a distance of 500 to 5,500 km - to Denmark for training exercises.
"We have to react to that and make decisions about what to do next in this area. It looks like we have to start producing these strike systems. Then, based on the actual situation, we have to decide where to deploy them for our security," said the head of state.
Such missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads were previously banned under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, but Washington terminated the agreement in 2019, accusing Russia of not complying with its terms. | BGNES
