Putin: Allowing long-range weapons would mean NATO is at war with Russia

"This would change the very nature of the conflict in a significant way. It would mean NATO countries are at war with Russia. If this is the case, then, taking into account the change in the nature of the conflict, we will make appropriate decisions based on the threats we will face," Putin said.

He spoke as senior U.S. and U.K. diplomats discussed easing the rules on firing Western weapons in Russia, which Kiev has been demanding for more than two and a half years after Moscow's offensive.

"Allowing Kiev to strike deep into Russia is a decision about whether NATO countries are directly involved in the military conflict or not," Putin said.

His comments came at a time when Kiev was demanding that the West provide more powerful weapons with fewer restrictions as Russia continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine. | BGNES
