On July 21, US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the election race for a second term in the White House. Biden has endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to enter the battle for the presidency with Donald Trump.
In addition to the current president, Harris received support from other prominent figures of the Democratic Party, including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"We are honored to join the president in his support of Vice President Harris and will do everything we can to support her," Bill and Hillary said in a joint statement.
"President Biden has capped his extraordinary career as a public servant with the presidency. He has led America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a shattered economy, strengthened our democracy and restored our standing in the world. We are honored to join the President in supporting for Vice President Harris, and we will do everything we can to support her," the joint statement added.
"We've been through many ups and downs, but nothing has worried us more about our country than the threat that Trump's second term poses. He's promised to be a dictator from day one, and the recent Supreme Court decision will only embolden him to tear up the Constitution even more so. Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with all the means at our disposal to get her elected. The future of America depends on it," the Clintons added.
Harris also received the support of the governors of California, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
"With our democracy at stake and our future at stake, there is no one better to lead the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and steer our country in a healthier direction than America's Vice President, Kamala Harris ", California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on the social network X.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has also endorsed Kamala Harris, saying he could be the Democratic nominee for vice president.
“Kamala Harris should be the next president. I've known the Vice President since we were prosecutors, and she has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country thoughtfully and with integrity. I look forward to campaigning for her,” Cooper wrote on the X social network.
The incumbent vice president also received the endorsement of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
"Kamala Harris is a patriot worthy of our support, and she will continue the work of generations of Americans who came before us to advance our union, protect our democracy, and advance true freedom," Shapiro said.
"The best way forward for the Democratic Party is to quickly rally behind Vice President Harris and refocus on winning the presidency," he added.
At least 27 Senate Democrats have publicly endorsed Kamala Harris' bid for president.
Although a majority of his faction supports Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has yet to endorse the vice president. Another member of the Senate Democratic leadership, Dick Durbin, also did not endorse Harris.
There are at least 60 House Democrats who have also endorsed Harris.
So far, the only one who has indicated a willingness to challenge Harris for the Democratic Party nomination is Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. | BGNES
