All of Prince's guitars are unique, but they're not all the same. At least not to collectors.
Prince's Sadowsky Telecaster - used on his 1986 Parade Tour and in the music video for his hit "America" - sold for $381,000 at a Julien's auction.
As rare as it is, it didn't come close to the $910,000 paid in June for Prince's yellow Cloud 3 guitar. It was crafted by Bloomington luthier Dave Roussan and was completed in early 1985.
The record for a guitar at auction is $6,010,000 for Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E. The Fender Mustang Cobain used on Nirvana's megahit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sold for $4,550,000.
When Bob Dylan became famous for his electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, he used a 1964 Stratocaster, which was sold at auction in 2013 for $965,000 to Indianapolis Colts owner and guitar collector Jim Irsay, who is exhibiting his collection in a traveling museum. | BGNES
