The Premier League will introduce semi-automatic offside technology next season in the hope of reducing the time it takes for VAR to make decisions.
At a shareholders' meeting, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to introduce the system, which is expected to cut the average VAR check to around 30 seconds.
"The technology will provide faster and more consistent virtual touchline positioning based on optical tracking of players and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to provide fans with a better in-stadium and broadcast experience," the Premier League said in a statement.
Football's world governing body FIFA is using semi-automated technology for the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar after running a number of trials, including at the Club World Cup.
It is also used in the Champions League and in Italy's Serie A.
Referees will still have to make rulings on subjective elements, such as whether an offside player is interfering with play.
The Premier League has not revealed the technology partner it will be working with and presumably no contracts have been signed yet.
The intention is to introduce the technology after one of the international breaks in September, October and November. /BGNES
