Police find cocaine in office of senior Belgian politician

Police found drugs in the office of Caroline Désir, the education minister of the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia, during a raid carried out in December.

La Dernière Heure newspaper reported that police found more than 50 packets of cocaine in the minister's office.

The prosecutor's office in Brussels confirmed that drugs had been found in the minister's office and said that a member of its staff had been arrested and charged with selling and possessing drugs.

Eight other suspects have been charged with selling and possessing drugs jointly - but two of them have been released on parole.

Desir confirmed that she learned that an assistant from her office was arrested on December 13 on drug trafficking charges.

She said she fired the employee "for breach of trust" and they then searched his office for "criminal items," finding "50 packages containing white powder."

Police also found €10 000 in cash in the arrested employee's home.

The Brussels prosecutor's office said the investigation was still ongoing. / BGNES
