German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will present a plan for a new model of the German military service.
Pistorius supports compulsory military service, at least to a limited extent, which is a controversial issue in Germany, DPA reported.
In 2011, the country effectively abolished compulsory military or civil service, although German law still provides for possible conscription in the event of war or other tension.
In recent years, however, the German army has faced a shortage of personnel and last year shrank to 181,500 soldiers.
The war in Ukraine prompted reflection on the state of the depleted German army and a promise by the Scholz government to rebuild the armed forces.
Pistorius commissioned studies into different models of conscription. During a debate in parliament, the minister indicated that he did not believe that Germany could rely entirely on volunteers for military service.
"I strongly believe that it will not work without mandatory components," he said.
The Minister of War has repeatedly emphasized that Germany must become "war-ready" to act as a reliable deterrent. | BGNES
