Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that he will not resign and will remain in office.
"I have decided to stay," he said in a long-awaited public address after a five-day silence.
The 52-year-old politician had been considering whether to resign over an investigation into corruption in his wife's business affairs, which he called a "political move" aimed at his government.
On 24 April, a Spanish court opened an investigation into the prime minister's wife, Begona Gomez, on suspicion of bribery.
The court's brief announcement came a few hours after online news site El Confidencial reported that investigators were probing Gomez's ties to several private companies that have received government funding or won public contracts. The investigation relates to alleged links Gomez had with the Spanish travel group Globalia, which owns Air Europa. Gomez herself does not hold public office and does not like to be shown in the media. /BGNES
