The Booker Prize for 2023 has been awarded to "The Song of the Prophet," a dystopian depiction of dictatorship in Ireland.
It was written by Paul Lynch, a 46-year-old Irishman who received the coveted prize for fiction for the first time.
It is set in Dublin and chronicles the narrative of a family dealing with a horrifying new world in which the democratic principles to which they have become accustomed begin to fade.
Lynch stated that "The Prophet's Song" was inspired by the Syrian war and refugee situation.
Lynch declared on stage at the Booker Prize event in Old Billingsgate, London, said he was "delighted" to bring the Booker back to Ireland.
He went on to say that the novel "wasn't easy to write."
Lynch's fifth novel, which he has been working on for four years, is now finished. He began writing it shortly before the birth of his kid, and by the time he finished it, his son was able to ride a bicycle.
The jury, according to chief judge Esi Edugyan, "was looking for a winning novel that can speak to the immediate moment while having the ability to outlive it."/BGNES
