Paraguay inflicted Brazil's fourth defeat in the World Cup qualifiers

Five-time world champions Brazil continued their lackluster form in CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and suffered a fourth defeat in eight games. In Asuncion, Paraguay got their first win over the Seleção since 2008 thanks to a great goal from Gustavo Gomes.

The central defender scored in the 20th minute with a long-distance shot for the final 1:0. Rodrigo and Vinicius had good chances to equalize for Brazil, but failed to do so. Thus, Dorival Junior's team occupies fifth place in the standings with 10 points from 8 matches. Paraguay climbed to ninth position with nine points.

Colombia stopped Argentina's winning streak with a 2:1 victory at home. James Rodriguez and company are the only team without a loss since the start of qualifying and are second in the standings with 16 points, two behind the world champions.

For the 2026 World Cup, the first six teams in the final ranking qualify directly, while the seventh will play a play-off. In this way, 7 out of a total of 10 teams from the CONMEBOL zone can participate in the World Cup.
