Pan Zhanle broke the world record in the 100m freestyle

China's swimming sensation Pan Zhanle won the Olympic 100m freestyle title with a world record.

The 19-year-old Pan covered the distance in 46.40 seconds, bettering the top achievement in the discipline by 0.40 seconds. This was the first world record at the Games.

Kyle Chalmers is second after finishing 1.08 seconds behind the champion. The Australian doubled his second position from Tokyo 2020 and now has a total of seven medals from the last three editions of the Olympic Games.

David Popovich finished third in 47.49 seconds. The 19-year-old Romanian congratulated himself with a second distinction at the games in the French capital after his title in the 200m freestyle. | BGNES
