France recorded their first win at Euro 2024 with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria.
Success for the Roosters in Dusseldorf came after Maximilian Weber's own goal in the 38th minute from Kylian Mbappe's cross. The star led the team with the captain's armband for the first time in a major forum.
Didier Deschamps' line-up met with serious backlash from the press of Ralf Rangnick's team. In the first half and 0-0, Austria missed an excellent chance when Christoph Baumgartner found himself alone against the goalkeeper but failed to convert.
In the second half, France failed to capitalize on their advantage. The second half started badly for Antoine Griezmann. He was pushed by Maximilian Weber and hit his head on one of the side panels, bleeding as a result.
In the 55th minute, Mbappe came out alone against the goalkeeper, but shot wide. The French kept up the pressure and found goalscoring chances through Griezmann, Kunde and Thuram.
Austria missed another golden chance in the 78th minute. Menjan saved the "blues" again.
Mbappe left the field at the end after suffering a collision and having his nose broken.
The result leaves Deschamps' side with three points in Group D, level with the Netherlands, who beat Poland 2-1 in Hamburg on June 16.
France and the Netherlands meet in Leipzig on Friday, while Austria face Poland earlier in the day in Berlin. | BGNES
