Tens of kilograms of cocaine were found in pallets of bananas in four of the stores of a French supermarket chain.
Officers at Grand Frais branches in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France were surprised to find between 40 and 50kg of drugs.
The cocaine did not come into contact with the fruit.
Detectives are trying to solve the mystery of how the drug, believed to be of Colombian origin, ended up on the pallets and – more importantly – who it was intended for.
Olivier Caracoch, prosecutor of Dijon, in Burgundy, said 10kg of cocaine was found in a fruit delivery to the Grand Frais store in Bonn. Between 10 and 12 kg were found in similar deliveries to three other stores.
