Over 1,000 people have been evacuated due to a fire at an oil depot in Crimea

More than 1,000 residents have been evacuated due to a fire at a large petro depot in the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula.

In recent months, Kiev has stepped up strikes against Russia's energy sector in a bid to cut revenues used by Moscow to finance the invasion, which is now in its third year.

Earlier, Ukraine confirmed that its forces carried out a "successful strike" on a marine oil terminal overnight in Feodosia.

Afterward, Russian authorities in Crimea said a fire had broken out at the landfill in the Black Sea port city of about 70,000 people and that there were no casualties.

"To ensure the safety of people living near the emergency site, 1,047 people were temporarily evacuated to shelters," Russian-appointed mayor of the city of Feodosia Igor Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.

The fire caused road closures and train disruptions. Russia's consumer safety watchdog said initial checks had not found excessive levels of air pollution.

The watchdog said the fire broke out at the Sea Oil Terminal, which its website says "stores fuel in case of emergencies and ensures Crimea's energy security".

The fire has spread to 2,500 square meters, a source from the emergency services told Russian state media. | BGNES
