Oscar nominations postponed due to Los Angeles fires

The ceremony was scheduled for January 17, but now the stars and films that will receive Oscar awards will be revealed on January 19.

Voting by the Academy's nearly 10,000 members, which began on January 8, has also been extended by two days, to January 14.

Former Oscars presenter Billy Crystal is among the celebrities who lost their homes in the fire, as are Paris Hilton, James Woods and Miles Teller.

In a letter sent to members, Academy CEO Bill Kramer said, "We want to extend our deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the devastating fires in Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area and we are thinking of you."

Conan O'Brien will emcee the 2025 Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on March 2.

The fires have wreaked havoc for Hollywood residents as well as the area's film and television industry.

A number of events and movie premieres in Los Angeles, including "Unstoppable," "The Wolf Man," Robbie Williams' "Better Man" and "
Pittsburgh Emergencies," were canceled or postponed.

The January 8 event to announce the nominees for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards was also cancelled.

Instead, the contenders were announced in a press release, with "Maleficent" topping the nominations.

"Substance" actress Demi Moore boosted her chances of an Oscar nomination by receiving the Golden Globe last week.

The Globes, the first major ceremony of the awards season, are considered a serious indicator of which films have gained momentum ahead of the Oscars. Other award-winning films include "Emilia Perez," "The Brutalist" and "Maleficent." | BGNES
