Orban: Bulgaria and Romania should be full Schengen members by the end of the year

The Hungarian presidency of the EU Council asks for Bulgaria and Romania to become full members of the Schengen area by the end of this year.

This is what Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg in the framework of the debate on the priorities of the Hungarian presidency, BGNES reported.

The head of the Hungarian government said that the asylum system was not working and that "if we let someone in, we can never send them home again".

"The EU policy on migration has failed and we are seeing the consequences of this fact. Several Member States are trying to find solutions. Illegal migration and safety fears have led to increased border controls," Orban said during the debate.

In this context, the Hungarian prime minister proposed a system that would allow for high-level meetings between the heads of state of the Schengen members, as happened for the euro area in 2008, during the financial crisis. | BGNES
