Orbán: I'm ready to "occupy" Brussels to protect Hungary's sovereignty

I am ready to march on Brussels and "occupy" the center of the European Union to protect Hungary's freedom and sovereignty before the European elections.

This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Reuters reported.

Orban, who has been in power for 14 years, hopes his Fidesz party will capitalize on growing far-right support across Europe as he prepares to take over the EU's rotating presidency in the second half of the year.

"We are David avoiding Goliath... It seems that Brussels does not want to understand this, so if we want to preserve Hungary's freedom and sovereignty, we have no choice but to occupy Brussels," he said in a speech at the National Museum in Budapest on the occasion of the anniversary of the beginning of the revolution and the war of independence in 1848-1849.

Orbán added that "Brussels is not the first empire to cast an eye on Hungary."

"Europe wants to impose something destructive and foreign to the Hungarian spirit. They want to forcefully plunge us into war, impose migrants on us and re-educate our children. Instead of peace, we got war, instead of security - the rule of law, and instead of prosperity - financial extortion. We were lied to, it's time to rebel," added Orbán.

According to him, Brussels has turned against the Europeans and against Hungary. Orban stated that he will not tolerate the EU "destroying farmers, the middle class, European companies, taking away the rights of nations, turning our children into debt slaves and bringing the whole of Europe into war."

Hungary's prime minister said US support for Donald Trump indicated a political shift in favor of conservative forces in the US and Europe, for which this year would be a turning point.

"At the beginning of the year we were still alone, at the end of the year we will be the majority," he emphasized.

Today marks Hungary's national holiday, marking the start of its failed revolution against the Habsburg monarchy, which Orbán compared to the EU. /BGNES
