On March 29, American journalist Evan Gershkovich marked one year since his detention in Russia, as U.S. efforts have yet to lead to his release, CNN reported.
"It's been a really difficult year for our family," Gershkovich's sister said. "It's just a lot of uncertainty and we just have to take each day."
The Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg on March 29, 2023, and was charged with espionage shortly thereafter - a charge that Gershkovich, the U.S. government and his employer have thoroughly denied. He is the first journalist to be arrested on such charges since the Cold War, and the Russian government has yet to produce any evidence to support its claim.
Less than two weeks after his arrest, Gershkovich was declared wrongfully detained by the US State Department, which called for his immediate release.
The 32-year-old journalist has been imprisoned in Moscow's notorious Lefortovo prison for the past year. He has yet to face trial, and on March 26 his pre-trial detention was extended again until June 30. / BGNES
