Olympiacos is the new Europa Conference League champion

Olympiacos won the Europa Conference League 1:0 against Fiorentina. El Kaabi scored the winning goal in the 117th minute of extra time.

This is Olympiacos' first European trophy.

Olympiacos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was tested several times in both halves to preserve the tie. Vicente Iborra nearly sealed victory for the Greek club when his powerful header went wide of the post with 10 minutes to go. Despite seven minutes of overtime at the end of the second half, the teams remained tied at 0:0.

Prior to Olympiacos' success, Panathinaikos were the only club from Greece to reach a European final when they lost to Johan Cruyff-inspired Ajax in the 1971 European Champions' Cup decider.

Both sides started with plenty of intensity, with Daniel Podence forcing Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano into a save and Andrea Belotti missing a good chance at the other end.

Fiorentina could have taken the lead after nine minutes but Nikola Milenkovic was caught off guard when he curled the ball past Olympiacos' Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Soon after, Greek goalkeeper Tzolakis saved Giacomo Bonaventura's shot, and later Nicolas Gonzalez completely missed a volley as Fiorentina had more chances in the first half.

Shots on goal dried up in the second half, although in the 69th minute Tzolakis came to Olympiacos' rescue again when he positioned himself well to save Christian Kouame's shot.

Olympiacos veteran Vicente Iborra almost scored with a header that went wide of the Fiorentina goal in the last 10 minutes.

But that was the last big chance in regular time as the game inevitably went to extra time.

Four minutes into extra time, Olympiacos tried in vain for a penalty, but the defender's hand was judged to be in a natural position.

Former Fiorentina icon Jovetic, who came on from the Olympiacos bench, forced Terracciano into a save with a 20-metre strike a minute later and the game seemed to come back to life.

However, after that, the game again broke down as neither team wanted to take any chances.

The penalties looked secure until the 117th minute when El Kaabi headed home his 16th goal in European competition this season.

The roar that greeted the confirmation of El Kaabi's goal, after a lengthy VAR review, showed what the moment meant to the club. /BGNES
