Number 1 seeded Zverev shocked by Altmaier in Acapulco

Alexander Zverev crashed out of the tennis tournament in Acapulco, Mexico after suffering a surprise loss in his first match of the competition. The number 1 seeded lost to his compatriot Daniel Altmaier 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 after nearly two and a half hours of play.

Altmaier broke first in the opening set and the break turned out to be the only one in the set. In the second set, the roles were reversed – this time the 2021 champion broke in the sixth game and never looked back. However, an early break by Altmaier at the start of the decisive third set led to the biggest surprise of the tournament.

Both players finished with the same number of winners and unforced errors - 22 to 15. The difference came as Altmaier managed to save six of seven break points against the world number six. In the round of 16, the German will play Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (5), Frances Tiafoe (8), Holger Rune (2) and Casper Ruud (6) started with wins in Acapulco. Tiafoe and Ruud had the most serious difficulties, needing three sets to deal with Max Purcell and Christopher Eubanks respectively. /BGNES
