Novak Djokovic won a historic first Olympic gold in tennis. In the final, the Serbian defeated Carlos Alcaraz after 7:6 (3), 7:6 (2). The Games title was the only major trophy the 24-time Grand Slam champion had not won...until today. With his success in Paris, he joined Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal with honors in all major competitions.
The Olympic final began with a tough battle, with the first four games lasting over half an hour. In them, the Serbian had an advantage and a total of four break points, but he was unable to take advantage of them. In the ninth game, Djokovic for the first time had problems with his serve, but he found a way to get out of a very difficult situation.
Alcaraz saved a set point to make it 6-6. But two mini-breaks in the tiebreak were what made the difference in Novak's favor - 7-6(3).
In the second part, a new tiebreak was reached, in which Djokovic won again - 7-6(2).
This was the seventh match between them, as Djokovic already has 4 to 3 successes for the Spaniard.
Djokovic is the oldest finalist and already an Olympic champion in men's tennis, while Alcaraz is the youngest finalist in history. | BGNES
