Nicole Kidman left the Venice Film Festival early after her mother's unexpected death

Nicole Kidman has cut short her appearance at the Venice Film Festival after learning that her mother Janelle Anne Kidman has died.

"Babygirl" director Hallina Raine announced the "Big Little Lies" star's departure from the event while accepting the best actress award for their film on her behalf Saturday, according to a Deadline video posted on X.

In the written statement, Nicole shared that she made it to Venice, but shortly after found out that her "beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Anne Kidman, had just passed away."

"I'm in shock and have to go to my family, but this award is for her," the Moulin Rouge star added.

"She shaped me, guided me and created me. I'm extremely grateful to be able to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken," Kidman concluded.

A representative for Nicole also confirmed the death of the Oscar winner's mother: "The family is heartbroken and asks for understanding at this difficult time."

So far, no other details surrounding Janelle's death have been revealed. She was 84 years old.

Nicole, 57, and her mother reportedly had a close relationship that included bonding over the movie star's acting and fashion.

In November 2023, the "Enchanted" star said Janelle still plays a role in many of her outfit choices.

"I grew up as a little girl with a grandmother who loved fashion and could sew, and my mother the same way. They loved beautiful clothes. They could make beautiful clothes," she said then.

"I watched them sew and embroider and knit and crochet. And I think when you grow up seeing people in your household do that, then you love it," the actress added.

The "Family Affair" star concluded, "And my mom still - she's so involved with what I wear." | BGNES
