New York was rocked by a small earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale and epicentred in the neighbouring state of New Jersey, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports.
There were no reports of injuries or damage.
In Brooklyn, buildings and light fixtures shook, AFP reported.
At the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, a Security Council meeting on the situation in Gaza was temporarily suspended following the quake.
"Is this an earthquake?" said Save the Children representative Janti Soeripto, who was speaking at the time.
Users on social media reported feeling the quake from Philadelphia to New York and east along Long Island. /BGNES
