Netanyahu: Gaza war will end after elimination of Hamas

The war in Gaza will not end until Hamas's capacity to govern and fight is eliminated.

This is what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. US President Joe Biden said earlier that Israel had proposed a new roadmap for peace.

"The prime minister has authorized the negotiating team to present a plan to achieve this goal, while insisting that the war will not end until all of its objectives are achieved, including the return of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas' military and governance capacity," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

"The precise plan proposed by Israel, including the conditional transition from stage to stage, allows Israel to preserve these principles," the statement added.

In his first major address outlining a solution to the eight-month conflict, Biden said the proposal begins with a six-week phase in which Israeli forces would withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza.

"It is time for this war to end, for the day after to begin," Biden said in a televised address from the White House, adding that "we cannot let this moment slip away" to seize the chance for peace. | BGNES
