"It is unthinkable for us at the moment to expand Schengen, but this has nothing to do with Bulgaria and Romania, it is a matter of security", said Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer after his meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, who is on a one-day visit to Vienna.
The two had a face-to-face meeting, followed by bilateral talks with the participation of the Bulgarian delegation, which includes the Minister of Internal Affairs Kalin Stoyanov and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Shekerletova.
"Schengen must be fixed. As long as it is not repaired, we cannot expand this space", Nehamer also said.
"We are very grateful to Bulgaria for all the efforts and sacrifices it makes to preserve the external borders of the EU, and thus also of Austria," the Austrian Chancellor also noted.
For his part, Nikolay Denkov stated the following after the meeting:
"Everyone has their positions, but we have to speak and state our arguments. We have no differences that the external borders should be strengthened, the contracts with the third countries from which the migrants come from should be strengthened," he explained.
We remind you that earlier, immediately after his arrival in Vienna, the Bulgarian Prime Minister announced that Bulgaria's membership in Schengen is expected to be discussed by the European Council in December. /BGNES
