NATO is considering establishing a permanent envoy post in Kyiv. The move is part of the alliance's long-term commitment to Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia, Foreign Policy reported.
The plan, which is expected to be announced at the NATO summit in Washington in July, if approved, includes the creation of a "high civilian representative" position in Ukraine. This role will be similar to the one NATO had in Afghanistan during its nearly two-year presence there. The new envoy will coordinate the alliance's support for Ukraine, including the provision of military aid from various Western countries.
The proposed move comes amid ongoing debate among NATO member states over whether to deploy their own troops on Ukrainian soil. While this decision could speed up the training and equipping of the Ukrainian military, it also risks escalating the situation into a wider confrontation between the West and Russia.
Last week, Vladimir Putin warned the West of "serious consequences" after the US and some major European powers allowed Ukraine to strike military targets in Russia with Western weapons. | BGNES
