Former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal will miss the Australian Open due to a muscle injury. This was revealed by the two-time champion in Melbourne on social networks.
"During my last game in Brisbane I felt a slight problem in the muscle which worried me. In Melbourne I had the opportunity to have an MRI and I have a micro tear in the muscle, not in the same place as the previous injury, which is good news. At the moment I am not ready to compete at maximum intensity in five-set matches. I will fly back to Spain where I will see my doctor, start treatment and rest," Nadal wrote on X.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner made a return to tennis at this week's Brisbane Open after nearly a year on the sidelines due to injury. He recorded two wins before losing in the quarterfinals to Jordan Thompson after dropping three match points and suffering a muscle problem.
"I've been working really hard to get back on the court and as I said before, my aim is to be at my best in three months time. It's sad that I won't be able to play in front of the amazing crowd in Melbourne, but otherwise the news are too bad and everyone in the team remains positive for the upcoming season. Thanks for the support and see you soon," added the Spaniard.
The Australian Open will be held from January 14-28. /BGNES
