Rafael Nadal confirmed today that he will miss Wimbledon to concentrate on the Paris Olympics.
The Spanish Tennis Federation announced yesterday that two-time Wimbledon champion Nadal and new Roland Garros trophy winner Carlos Alcaraz will represent the country at the Games in the French capital. Nadal, 38, lost in the first round of the French Open and hinted that he was likely to miss the All England Club, where he is champion in 2008 and 2010.
"During my press conference after my match with Zverev at Roland Garros, I was asked about my summer schedule and I've been training on clay ever since. Yesterday it was announced that I will be participating in the Summer Olympics in Paris, my last Olympics. To that end, my team and I believe that the best thing for my body is not to change surfaces and continue to play on clay until then. It is for this reason that I will miss Wimbledon this year. I am saddened that I will not be able to experience the incredible atmosphere of this outstanding tournament", he wrote on social media.
Nadal is the Olympic singles champion since Beijing 2008 and has doubles gold from the 2016 Rio Games. | BGNES
