Andy Murray will miss Wimbledon after undergoing spinal surgery. The three-time Grand Slam champion retired injured during the first set of his Queen's Club second-round match against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday.
He underwent a scan, and the problem eventually had to be resolved after surgery. The 37-year-old Scot was hoping to play at his beloved Wimbledon, which starts on July 1. His All England Club appearance was expected to be Murray's last Slam, but those plans fell through. The Briton will be out for around six weeks, putting a huge question mark over his participation in the Paris Olympics.
"Following surgery to remove a cyst from his spine, Andy Murray is unfortunately out of Wimbledon. Rest and recover Andy, we will miss you", the ATP wrote on the X social network.
Murray had his sights set on competing at Wimbledon in both singles and doubles, where he would play in tandem with his brother Jamie. The Paris Olympics begin after Wimbledon, with Murray making the British squad after the International Tennis Federation awarded him a place at the Games following his London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic titles.
Olympic tennis begins on July 27, with Murray playing singles and doubles in tandem with Dan Evans. He has already hinted that he will retire in the summer. | BGNES
