"Mufasa" topped the North American box office during the long holiday weekend after ceding the top spot a week earlier, analysts said.
The animated film earned an estimated $15.5 million for the period from Friday through Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Exhibitor Relations said.
Two new films - Sony's "One of Them Days" and Universal's " Wolf Man" - took second and third place.
Analyst David A. Gross predicted a "very profitable period" for "One of Them Days," in which Keke Palmer and singer-songwriter SZA are roommates struggling to pay rent or be evicted after their boyfriend spends their money.
Over the holiday weekend, the film earned about $14 million.
"It's an excellent start for an original black American comedy," he said, backed by "sensational reviews from critics and an excellent audience score."
The horror film "The Wolf Man," starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, came in below analysts' expectations with $12 million in four days.
As the start of a new horror franchise and a remake of the 1941 classic starring Bela Lugosi, Gross called the box office result "weak."
In fourth place, down one spot from last weekend, was Paramount's animated "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" with $10.3 million.
In fifth place, holding steady in its eighth weekend, was "Moana 2" with $8.4 million.
Thanks to those numbers, the Disney blockbuster crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. It's the studio's third premiere in 2024 to reach the billion-dollar club after "Deadpool and the Wolverine" and "Inside Out 2."
The top 10 is rounded out by:
"Den of Thieves 2: Panther" ($7.8 million)
"Nosferatu" ($5.1 million)
"Total Stranger" ($4.6 million)
"Wicked" ($4.56 million)
"Babygirl" ($2.5 million) | BGNES
