Moderate physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems.
Researchers at the University of Sydney have found that just 1.5 to 4 minutes of short bursts of high-intensity exercise during the day reduces the risk of heart failure, stroke and heart attack. This association was observed more significantly in women compared to men.
"Lack of physical activity is a major public health problem that contributes to up to 6 million deaths per year worldwide and is directly responsible for at least 15-20% of cardiovascular disease," Dr. Emmanuel Stamatakis, director of the Mackenzie Wearables Research Center at the Charles Perkins Centre and professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, Australia, told Medical News.
"There is an urgent need to identify best practice and encourage people to be physically active. Structured exercise, such as gyms, running, group exercise classes, etc., are fantastic for achieving these goals, but only 20% of the middle-aged population do them regularly," he explained. | BGNES
