Mexico's foreign ministry said the country does not intend to join BRICS, but is closely monitoring the association's development. Thus, the department reacted to the information that appeared in the media that Mexico could join the bloc in 2024.
"Mexico has not asked to join the BRICS group. Mexico follows with interest the development of the association because of the economic weight of the member states and the bilateral relations that our country maintains with its members," said a message from the Mexican Foreign Ministry on the social network X The ministry called the media reports baseless.
The Foreign Ministry does not specify which media are spreading information about Mexico's possible entry into the BRICS. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in the summer of 2023 that his country would not join BRICS, as the priority was developing trade agreements with the US and Canada.
On the eve of March 3, information about Mexico's possible entry into BRICS was spread on social networks. So, for example, the record appeared on the BRICSinfo page on the social network X. The main title of the page is the abbreviation BRICS, the page is marked as authentic because it is linked to the page of the site that publishes material on BRICS. Similar information is being circulated on the page of the Chinese Consul General in Belfast, which is also marked as authentic. In the fall of 2023, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported that the Russian ambassador to South Africa presented the head of the diplomatic mission of the UAE Mahsh Saeed Al Hameli with a symbolic banknote of the BRICS single currency with a denomination of 100 units. On one side, the flags of the members of the bloc were depicted, and on the other - the flags of a number of countries, including Mexico./BGNES
