The mayor of a town in western Mexico was killed on June 3, AFP reported, citing authorities. This comes just 24 hours after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected the first female president of the Latin American country.
The government of the state of Michoacán condemned "the murder of the mayor of Cotiha - Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa", the regional Ministry of the Interior announced.
A police team has been dispatched to try and apprehend those responsible.
Yolanda Sanchez Figueroa was kidnapped for three days last September near Guadalajara. She was elected mayor in the 2021 elections on the ticket of the Party of National Action (PAN, liberal-conservative right).
The mayor was attacked in the street by armed civilians in a van.
The kidnappers may belong to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), one of the country's two most violent gangs. They allegedly threatened the mayor because she opposed the cartel taking control of the municipal police. | BGNES
