Meta said it is investigating widespread outages on its Facebook, Instagram and Thraeds platforms after users around the world were blocked from their accounts, AFP reports.
"We are aware that people are having problems accessing our services. We are currently working on this issue," Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a post on X.
According to the website DownDetector, reports that Facebook was down peaked at 5:30 p.m. - around 500,000. The peak of Instagram messages was around 70,000 at the same time.
Threads, Twitter's competitor (X), which was launched in 2023, also suffered from outage reports, although Watsapp, Meta's messaging service, seemed spared.
Facebook's status page, intended for advertisers, said the site was suffering from "serious disruptions" and that "engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
Users who tried to access Facebook were asked to log in, but were unable to log into their accounts using the correct password.
On Instagram, users on mobile devices shared that their feeds were not being updated.
Facebook is the world's largest social media platform with 3 billion monthly active users.
According to the latest data, Instagram has about 1.35 billion users. / BGNES
