Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni steps down as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists group.
"When I was asked to extend my mandate until the European elections, I agreed," Meloni said at the annual festival organised by her Italian Brothers party, which represents the largest delegation in the ECR with 24 MEPs.
"Now that the elections have taken place, I think I have done my duty and I would like to announce that I will resign as president of the European Conservatives," Meloni continued, stressing that the group now "deserves to have a president who can deal with it full-time."
Poland's former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki is running for the ECR leadership, with his Law and Justice (PiS) party having 20 MEPs, ANSA reported.
Meloni, who has held the post since 2020, expects Morawiecki to run and will support him. | BGNES
