Daniil Medvedev is through to the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Miami after stopping Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 7-6 (7). The match lasted just over an hour and 40 minutes.
Last year's champion got off to a strong start and pulled away after two breaks. In the second set, the representative of Chile was more to the third in the scheme and it came to a tiebreak in which Medvedev was losing by 3-5 points. Jarry subsequently saved two match points, but was unable to save the third and so his opponent went ahead.
Medvedev faces Jannik Sinner in a repeat of last year's final. Number 2 in the scheme from Italy expectedly prevailed over the unseeded Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic with 6-4, 6-2.
Machac provided some resistance to the Australian Open champion in the first set when the pair traded breaks early in the set, but then conceded another break to lose it. In the second, the Czech was no match for his more famous opponent and won only two games.
Sinner and Medvedev have a total of ten matches between them, and the balance in them is 6-4 wins in favour of the Russian. Curiously, Medvedev won each of their first six meetings, but in the next four Sinner was consistently victorious, including in the final in Australia in January when he trailed by two sets. /BGNES
