The 72-year-old actor starred as Luke Skywalker opposite Princess Leia played by the late Hollywood icon in the original trilogy and sequels of the sci-fi series. However, he admits that his experience in the franchise has been brought down by her death from sudden cardiac arrest in 2016 .
"My wife (Marilu York) came into the bedroom - she got up earlier than me - I was still asleep. She had tears streaming down her face as she said Carrie had died...It forever changed the way I reacted to Star Wars in general. The heart was gone. I don't talk about it because I don't like reliving it," he said during his "Mark Hamill Live" panel at Fan Expo Chicago.
Reflecting on the original 1977 film, Hamill paid tribute to his late colleague for bringing "effortless feminism" to the franchise by confronting the fearsome Darth Vader and taking command of Skywalker and Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford).
"She was tough, she said it right to Darth Vader's face - she wasn't in the least bit intimidated by Darth Vader. And when we saved her, she was joking around with Luke and Han. She made us look like two marionettes. It's effortless feminism because it's not an excuse, it just shows that a woman is as capable as any man," Hamill added.
Hamill revealed that he and Fisher had a turbulent relationship, but also shared a "special" relationship with each other. | BGNES
